We are launching “Our Recommends” as a regular (bi-annual, or tri-annual) feature, which would provide a budget-wise table of gadgets that The Indian Geek recommends within a specific device category. This inaugural article is on smartphones.

This table needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. As stated in our buying guide for smartphones, there is no “best device” that one can just go out and buy. Please do look into your needs, and your lifestyle before proceeding with your purchase.

Some pointers to keep in mind while going through this table:

* Multiple devices from one manufacturer/platform have been suggested in certain budget ranges since there’s a trade-off; For example, the Nokia X6 has a capacitive touch screen, with a Carl Zeiss-optics sporting camera and accompanied by Nokia’s more expensive headset, compared to the Nokia C6, which trades the cost of the capacitive touch screen, the lens and the headset for a resistive touch screen (cheaper), a QWERTY slide-out keyboard, and only 200 MB on-device storage, compared to 8/16 GB with the X6.

* Devices marked in Italics have been announced for India, but not yet officially released here.

* Each device that has been recommended has been recommended based on the availability of competition from the same manufacturer/platform, within the same price range, with a similar feature-set.

* If you MUST have Apple’s iOS, and are not rich enough for the high cost, then you could technically look at getting yourself an iPod Touch 4th generation, which is worth the money (8 GB for around Rs. 13,500) Our only gripe with this is that it would be an additional device to carry, in addition to your phone.
