Samsung Galaxy S LCD 4 GB vs OliveSmart V-S300

We really don’t know how the launch of the first HSPA+ Android phone in India slipped completely under our noses, but it did. We knew that Olive Telecom was all set to launch such a phone several weeks ago, but the actual launch itself missed us. Thanks to a faithful commenter, we were notified of it’s existence. This same commenter wanted to know if the Samsung Galaxy S LCD 4GB variant would be a better buy than Olive Telecom’s offering. We leapt at the chance to throw out a comparison between the two – to help others out there trying to decide between these two phones with a budget of around Rs. 19-20,000/- We should definitely note here that with the launch of these two high-end Android phones, the Motorola Defy has become all but obsolete at its Rs. 18,500/- cost. The Motorola Defy could still offer value for a customer looking for a rugged, high-mid range Android phone. If the “rugged” features of the Defy don’t strike your fancy, we’d definitely ask you to stick to one of these two more capable alternatives. You know the drill by now – hit that “Read more” button for the comparison of their specifications.

Many of the specs that the Samsung Galaxy S LCD 4GB variant seems to triumph on, are specifications that don’t really matter. For example, we haven’t come across any non-Samsung devices having Bluetooth 3.0 in the hands of people. So although Bluetooth 3.0 is super-speedy, it can’t be a deciding factor for purchasing the Galaxy S LCD 4 GB unless every single device you own has Bluetooth 3.0 (not to mention your friends’ devices!). The 4 GB ROM is definitely more welcome than the 2 GB ROM provided by the OliveSmart V-S300. However, if you’re someone who’s really concerned about performance more than anything else, we can tell you straight off that the OliveSmart is definitely going to perform better than the Samsung Galaxy S LCD 4 GB, even if you upgrade the Samsung phone to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The TouchWiz layer used by Samsung in all their phones hogs quite a bit of resources, bringing down the possible performance levels of the phone. If you’re a person who wishes to root the phone and install a speedy custom ROM, then such things shouldn’t matter really. If battery life is your thing, then be warned that the Samsung is definitely going to give you more mileage than the OliveSmart.

If you haven’t guessed it by now, allow us to spell it out for you – there’s no clear winner between the two. You would need to decide on which exact spec/detail is the most important to you, and buy the phone that suits your decision. We are leaning slightly towards the OliveSmart V-S300 due to its built-in flash and metallic design. But that’s just us. You can always go and buy something else, and let us know in the comments below.

Thanks to JonesSandy for bringing our attention to the OliveSmart V-S300.
