Nikon Wireless Mobile Adapter WU-1a, attached to Nikon dSLR D3200       Nikon Wireless Mobile Adapter WU-1a

During our review of the Sony Tablet S, something that we really liked was being able to insert the SD card from a dSLR camera and downloading the images for people to view instantly, without lugging around a Notebook computer or searching for a Desktop computer. Seems like the folk at Nikon think it’s a feature worthwhile enough to release an accessory – the new Wireless Mobile Adapter WU-1a was announced along with the new Nikon D3200 dSLR yesterday. It is listed for pre-ordering on US-based online stores for $60, which should translate to anywhere from Rs. 4,000/- to Rs. 6,000/- when it comes to India. Expected availability should be soon, since the Nikon India website already has a product page up for the new Adapter. At this time, Nikon has announced compatibility of the Adapter only with the newly launched D3200 camera.

Basically, the Wireless Mobile Adapter WU-1a has two functions – to enable sharing of existing or newly captured images from the D3200’s memory card to a compatible Android/iOS device (Android will get the Wireless Mobile Adapter Utility app at launch with a promised release for iOS soon) with Wi-Fi functionality. Apart from this, the app can also be used to remotely control the D3200 with the Android/iOS device displaying the liveview image directly from the camera. Key settings such as available battery and storage space, shutter speed, aperture setting and focus points would be displayed on the Android/iOS device. Such functionality would definitely be a boon to photographers who like to use tripods to capture prolonged-exposure shots, or group photographs. The standard infrared remote that has been available till now for Nikon’s dSLR cameras can only click the shutter; none of the other settings can be viewed or changed. The WU-1a is definitely a worthy addition to a dSLR photographer’s kit, provided you own a compatible Android or iOS device.
